Meteora monasteries Quick Facts

Meteora is a unique area in Greece, full of impressive, massive rock formations. These rocks were formed millions of years ago. Over time, they were further shaped by the wind, rain, and other natural phenomena.

The rock pillars were formed approximately 60 million years ago by earthquakes and weathering. The foundation of Meteora monasteries began around the 11th century. In the 12th century, the monastery was officially formed and established as a church to the Mother of God as their worshiping center. Meteora thrived until the 17th century when under Turkish occupation they fell into decline

All 6 of the remaining monasteries are now in use. Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together, or large nets used to haul up both goods and people.

Theopetra Cave, located in the Meteora limestone rock formations of Thessaly, Central Greece, is likely to be one of the oldest human constructions on earth, as findings indicate that the cave was inhabited as early as 130,000 years ago.

Meteora is a popular rock-climbing site, with people coming from all around the world to reach the top. During World War II the site was bombed and raided with many pieces of art stolen. The site is featured in the James Bond movie, ‘For Your Eyes Only’.
