What is the Giant’s Causeway? Giant’s Causeway is a bizarre, bewildering and almost extraterrestrial landscape in Northern Ireland with huge hexagonal stone basalt columns showing up from the pounding Atlantic waves.

If you see it, you’ll understand why the ancients believed the Giant’s Causeway was not a natural feature but rather the handwork of mighty ancient giants. The legend says that an Irish giant, Finn McCool build a Causeway so he could cross the sea to fight the Scottish giant Benandonner. All that now remains are its ends in Ireland. Another version says it was built by the Fomorians, mysterious and hostile giants coming from under the sea or the earth. In reality the rocks were formed some 60 million years ago by volcanic activity, and they represent an example of columnar basalt.
