Mystery about “How Did Moses Die?”
One mystery of the Torah is “Exactly how did Moses die on Mount Nevo?” Torah states that God commanded Moses to die on Mount Nevo, that Moses did die there, and that God buried him in a nearby valley in a place not to be known to any person.
And God said to Moses, ascend the Mount Nevo, and you shall die. On the mountain God is telling Moses, not just that he will die and where the death will occur, but that he, Moses, must do something active to bring about his own death. The Bible doesn’t say How is Moses was supposed to fulfil this command to end his life. Moses was healthy and vigorous at age 120.
There is no explanation of how Moses carried out this command in Deuteronomy 32:50. All that is said, in Deuteronomy 34 is that Moses died in the land of Moab, that God buried him in the valley, and no one knows his burial place to this day.
Moses’ death could be compared with an assisted end of life or with the apoptosis, which is the programmed end of life of a living cell which shuts down in complete health through information embedded in the DNA.
