Sanxingdui is an archaeological site and a major Bronze Age culture in modern Guanghan, Sichuan, China. Largely discovered in 1986 following a preliminary finding in 1927, the site revealed artifacts dating to the twelfth–eleventh centuries BC.
Sanxingdui culture is part of the ancient kingdom of Shu. The artifacts have a unique artistic style that was completely unknown in the history of Chinese art.
The site was discovered by accident by a farmer in 1929 who was digging for an irrigation ditch. In 1986 more stuff was found accidentally in sacrificial pits containing thousands of gold, bronze, jade, and pottery artifacts that had been broken (perhaps ritually disfigured), burned and carefully buried. The Sanxingdui ruins are the heart of the mysterious Shu kingdom of 4,500 years ago. So far, no written records have been found to explain where these ancient people came from or the significance of the relics they left behind.
An earthquake nearly 3,000 years ago may be the culprit in the mysterious disappearance of one of China’s ancient civilizations, the Sanxigdui culture.
