Theodora (c. 500-548) was a significant Byzantine empress who co-ruled with her husband, Emperor Justinian I, during the 6th century. Of humble origins, Theodora’s early life involved performing in a circus and being a courtesan or making her living as a wool spinner .

Theodora’s most notable achievement was her role in quelling the Nika Revolt in 532, which preserved Justinian’s rule. Her legacy endures through her contributions to Byzantine society and her depiction in contemporary art and literature, highlighting her lasting impact as an influential empress. Her legacy makes her a symbol of strength, reform, and female empowerment.
