He was a king of Babylon during the Neo Babylonian era, has ruled from 605 BC to 562 BC. He was the longest reigning and most powerful monarch of the Neo Babylonian Empire. His army has defeated the Phoenicians, the Assyrians, the Egyptians and he occupied Jerusalem.
He has built amazing palaces including the Hanging Gardens of Semiramis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Antic World. During his time Babylon was the most amazing city of known world. He is depicted in the Bible in the Book of Daniel. He destroyed Solomon’s temple and he is responsible for the Babylonian Captivity period. He took Daniel in captivity but soon he promoted him as his counselor and prime minister. He had a dream showing a statue build in gold but with clay feet that was easily destroyed.
Daniel interpreted his dream
as a sign form God that his empire would soon fall.
The meaning of this story
is that empires and power can easily come and go, while God’s will and legacy last. He proclaimed himself a God at some point and he killed Zedekiah’s sons in front of him. He has built the Ishtar Gate and the great walls of Babylon. He has built the Hanging Gardens. He is depicted in the Opera “Nabucco” by Giuseppe Verdi.
